How Long Does The Certificate Take?

This qualification will take around 5 days to complete, including taught hours, private study and background reading.

Course Programme

The NEBOSH Certificate in Fire Safety contains 6 elements:

  • Element 1 – Managing Fire Safety

  • Element 2 – Principles of Fire and Explosion

  • Element 3 – Fuel, Oxygen and Ignition Sources and Control Measures

  • Element 4 – Fire Protection of Buildings

  • Element 5 – Safety of People in the Event of Fire

  • Element 6 – Fire Safety Risk Assessment

Learning Outcome

Upon completion of this course, you will have the knowledge and skills to understand fire and explosion protection and prevention principles, and carry out an effective fire risk assessment in a low to medium risk workplace. You’ll also be able to justify fire safety improvements with moral and financial arguments, and advise your employer on the requirements for the fire protection of premises and workers, including appropriate training,

The Assessment

This qualification has a two-step assessment process, consisting of:

  • An open book examination that can be completed at home or in a safe and suitable location. You’ll be presented with a realistic scenario, from which you must carry out a series of tasks using the evidence presented and underpinning knowledge you have gained during your studies and revision.

  • A practical fire risk assessment, surrounding standards such as the Home Office fire guidance and PAS79-1:2020. This stage will take around three hours to complete in full detail, showing your understanding of the requirements and completing a risk assessment of good quality.


Both of these assessments are marked by external examiners appointed by NEBOSH, chosen for their experience and expertise.

Professional Recognition

Holders of the NEBOSH Certificate in Fire Safety are entitled to associate Membership (AIIRSM) of the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM).


The certificate is also accredited and credit rated by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) Accreditation. It sits within the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) at SCQF Level 6, with 5 SCQF credit points. SCQF Level 6 is comparable to RQF or CQFW Level 3 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Who Are NEBOSH?

Established in 1979, NEBOSH became a UK-recognised awarding body in 2000, and received Approved Awarding Body Status from the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) Accreditation in 2009. They provide vocational qualifications in health, safety and environmental management, setting industry standards for workplaces worldwide. Their goal is to provide professionals with the knowledge to manage risks.

Are There Any Entry Requirements?

There are no entry requirements for the NEBOSH Certificate in Fire Saferty. However, it is important that learners have a suitable understanding of the English language, and can articulate the syllabus.


NEBOSH recommends that learners have an understanding of English equivalent to an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 6.0 or higher.

When and How Will I Receive My Results?

Results will be provided by NEBOSH upon completion of the course. NEBOSH aim to send out the results 10-12 weeks after the exams. Your certificate will arrive once the results are announced.
